What is a sunga?

A sunga is the original Brazilian-style men's swim trunk. Shorter than boardshorts, more refined than briefs, cut for full support and a flattering silhouette. It is the icon of Rio's beach culture and the swim trunk that defined modern Brazilian beachwear.

Is it a swim brief, a square cut or a swim boxer?

English never settled on one name for this cut, which is half the reason it is hard to shop for. Square cut is the closest: squared off at the leg, with a short hem instead of the high-cut opening of a racing brief. Some brands call the identical shape a swim boxer, adidas among them. Others shelve it with swim briefs, alongside Speedo and Budgy Smuggler. What it is not is a boardshort or a knee-length swim trunk. In Brazil none of this comes up, because it has always just been a sunga.
